April Artist of the Month

Ann Shrager NEAC
Ann Shrager was born in London in 1948. She studied at Byam Shaw School of Painting and the Royal Academy Schools. She has been a member of the NEAC since 1975 and has won both their Arts Club and Travel prizes and continues to exhibit nationwide. Her paintings depict quintisentially English and Indian scenes and are bathed in nostalgia.

Shrager works with oil paints but her finished pieces can often look more like watercolour, this is due to her technique of diluting the oil paint with turps which creates a far looser medium allowing for a more free- flowing result.
Shrager’s uncluttered approach allows the viewer to reach their own response to the moment she has captured. Whether she is painting misty scenes of rowers on the River Thames or vibrant sari clad villagers in India, her brushwork and use of colour creates a balance in which the work manages to be both spontaneous and lively whilst retaining sensitivity and simplicity.
